Hardcover with DJ, Farrar Straus and Giroux / Second Printing, 1965 / DJ with mild age-toning esp. along side of rear flap / Inscribed and Signed in ink by Berryman to Claude Fredericks on ffep thus: "To Claude affectionately and also with admiration and gratefulness - John Berryman / Bennington 4 December 1965. Fredericks (1923- 2013) was an American poet, playwright, printer, writer, and teacher, and founder of the Banyan Press. He was a professor of literature at Bennington College in Vermont for more than 30 years, from 1961 to 1993. He is the author of a largely unpublished 50,000 page journal which he began at the age of 8. Berryman was teaching English A at Harvard (with Delmore Schwartz) in 1941 when CF was a Freshman there. CF didn't have to take it because he aced is College Boards, but CF appeared at JB and DS's extracurricular Poetry Club. They loved Claude's poems, thought they were outrageous and original (esp. the 'Fly' poem - "The fly spends its day. . ." published in CF's Selected Poems 2005). JB and CF became good friends there in Boston and then later in NYC. The oval spot at bottom left of dedication page must be residue from a bookseller's sticker. Perhaps CF already owned the book when JB signed it.
