Fredericks (1923- 2013) was an American poet, playwright, printer, writer, and teacher,
and founder of the Banyan Press. He was a professor of literature at Bennington College in Vermont for more than 30 years, from 1961 to 1993. He is the author of a largely unpublished 50,000 page journal which he began at the age of 8. In the inscription Van Vechten uses his nicknames for Fredericks and Saul and refers to an edition of Stein's "Blood on the Dining Room Floor" which Fredericks' Banyan Press was about to publish.
